In the past few months, I have been very busy with organizing and going to parties. For a few times, I had to look for friends' houses late at night, and headlights are not the right tool for the job. My Surefire Z2 was good if I stick it out the window, but only when it's not raining. As we are closing in to Thanksgiving and Christmas, parties are going to peak, and it gets dark earlier, which only means looking for addresses in cold dark unfamiliar environment will be more frequent.

For this reason, I am considering adding one more non-performance related device on to my car, the Unity Spotlight. Should I do it? Votes and opinions please.

Cop car look, if at all, is just a coincidental side effect. Safety and functionality are what I am after from the beginning. My front push bumpers are for deers that jump out at night across highways. Computer on a RAM-MOUNT is there so that I am always available at work as a consultant without being tied to my house, and Internet access helps a lot when you need to find any info, or even updated locations that the RER radio do not have yet. Rear low profile VHF antenna is to extend my Internet access range and to reduce network disconnects. Second rear low profile VHF antenna is for my cell phone for same reason. If I simply want the look, I would not have ordered an AWD to begin with, nor will I get the factory HID. I would have got black steel wheels and flashing lights too. However, I do honestly think that a lot of the police and military technologies do make a lot of sense, and history has proven that a lot of their technologies do make their way into civilian markets over time, and become things we take for granted daily. GPS is one great example, encryption is another, and the list goes on.

I do have MyGig RER radio with GPS, and I do use GPS religiously just because it has the active traffic condition capability, but I believe I am not alone when I say that street numbers are not always accurate enough, and sometimes it was as far as 15 houses down when it said "destination is on your right". To top that off, I do have very good friends who have "grown" small forests in front of their houses, and street number on mailboxes are out of maintenance enough that they are invisible by sunset, and they usually have neighbors with similar front yards that blend in very well. Finding the house after dark without strong flashlights is time consuming if not impossible.

i wouldn't bother with the unity light. have a look at a golight. http://www.golight.com/products/golight.html
they're pretty damned bright (more candlepower than the unity) and they make a model that mounts via a magnetic base so you can mount it on your roof and then take it off when you get there. it's controlled by a wireless remote which can both swivel and pivot the light. heck, you'll even be able to light up behind you. they're a lot of fun. no mods needed to the car, can be transferred from one to another, and relatively inexpensive when you factor in installation costs, depreciation costs of the car after modding for light, etc.

Definitely an opinion situation, but IMHO does not belong on a civilain car: it's a Jeep, Hummer, Toyota FJ, 4X4 pickup item, but just doesn't belong on a car -- but I could care less if you put it on yours: I just wouldn't put it on mine.

What's wrong with a hand-held rechargeable searchlight? I've got one of those, and it sits in the back of the car.

Man, I wish you showed me this golight two days ago. I could have mounted two of this on my push bumper. With remote control, they would have served my purposed well. Too late now! Big 1/2" holes have been drilled and no turning around. Shuck!Image

I already have a Surefire Z2. Problem with light inside the car is internal reflection, expecially when raining outside. That's why my search light has to be external.
